Clarence Elder - Elder Vineyard
Retired
Oil Man launches second life as vineyard owner
Clarence grew up
in the Central Valley. His parents moved to the Bakersfield area when
he was 5 years old. As he was growing up, he worked in the surrounding
farms for summer jobs. He learned how to grow and harvest a variety of
fruits and vegetables. Best of all he acquired "hands on" knowledge in
the vineyards.
Clarence and his wife (Allene) moved to Southern California. They lived
there for 37 years. After having a very satisfying career in oil and
retiring it was time start a new life doing something he wanted to do
for a long time. He and Allene bought their land in Creston in 1994.
Their home was built in 1995 and they moved in the same year. Their
vineyard was planted in 1996. Clarence first had the vineyard planted
all in Cabernet Sauvignon, but after a few years he decided to graft
some acreage to Merlot.
He is one of the charter members of the Independent Grape Growers Paso
Robles Area (IGGPRA) and serves as a director on the board. Clarence
totally believes in the slogan "Growers helping growers". Sharing
of good vineyard farming practices not only produces the best quality
grapes, but also helps the new vineyard owner become a good farmer too.
As chair of the seminar committee, he enjoys bringing our members
seminars that are helpful and informative.
Clarence is also active in his church and other organizations. He sits
on two other boards and donates his time in helping people in need.
Clarence and his wife have lived in this area for 12 years. It is
wonderful to rise early, go out, look around and see what all your hard
work has accomplished.
