Richard
Sauret, President
Local
Boy Turned Award Winning Grape Producer
Richard Sauret
is really a Paso Robles native. His grandparents came to Paso in
the 1880’s and his family has been there ever since. Richard was
born in Atascadero, CA in 1935 and was raised in the Oak Flat area just
five miles northwest of Paso Robles, where he still lives today.
He started
working and learning at the early age of seven when he had a job
helping a neighbor prune and harvest his Zinfandel crop. These
unforgettable experiences lead Richard Sauret to where he is today.
Over the years,
he has farmed almonds, walnuts, hay and raised cattle. In 1952 he
planted his first vineyard of head pruned Zinfandel and has been in the
wine grape business since then, purchasing more land and planting more
vineyards.
Through one of
his early customers, Dr. Stanley Hoffman, Richard’s Zinfandel grapes
were recognized as one of the finest grown and he became "vineyard
designated". Since his location and viticulture practices produce
some of the highest quality fruit, his crops have always been in high
demand, leading to supplying Rotta, Castoro, Eberle and Nadeau family
vintners.
Additionally,
for the past 18 years he has supplied grapes to Rosenblum Cellars whose
wines, with Richard’s grapes, have won many awards. The 2002
vintage was Wine Spectators number forty-one pick and the 2003 vintage
placed number thirty, world wide.
Richard Sauret
currently farms Zinfandel as well as Petite Sarah and Alicante because
the three varietals blend together very well.
Mr. Sauret is a
"hands on" grower, doing all his own work except for the harvest, which
allows him to personally see to the needs of each vine. His goals
are to continue to produce the highest quality fruit possible and to
improve the Paso Robles appellation.
